Almost nobody bought a ticket. The Shawshank Redemption opened in the fall of 1994 into the teeth of Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, underperformed badly β the unwieldy title took much of the blame β and then got rescued in stages: seven Oscar nominations, a big second life at the video store, and finally the top of IMDb's all-time user rankings, where it has sat for years. Merch followed the same arc; period Shawshank shirts barely exist, with one nineties promo reportedly circulating as a Hollywood Video giveaway. The design here goes painted-poster montage on the front β Red front and center under his cap, Andy lit by the storm he timed his breakout to, warden and guards stacked behind β then switches to a photo collage on the back, the two of them behind bars in film-strip panels. The shirt's whole subject is the most famous second chance in American film, and the design leans on faces rather than the rain-soaked triumph shot, which is the harder, better choice.
