"Did you see it on Showtime?" asks the print, over the poster face every video-store kid knows: Jodie Foster's eyes gone amber, the death's-head moth over her mouth. This is a cable-network promo design β the back reads "SHOWTIME. We entertain you like no one can.", a documented Showtime tagline β made to advertise the network's airing of the film, not to sell in stores, which is its own scarce lane of movie shirt. The poster it borrows hides a secret worth the shirt alone: the skull on the moth's back is Philippe Halsman's 1951 photograph In Voluptas Mors β seven nude women arranged into a skull by Salvador DalΓ β sitting in plain sight on one of the most-printed images of the 1990s. The Silence of the Lambs swept the Big Five Oscars in 1992, only the third film ever to do it, with Anthony Hopkins on screen for barely sixteen minutes. The shirt's question answers itself. Everyone saw it, everywhere.
