The Fin

A keel is a twin with a long base and a shallow depth, and the Hobie Fish is True Ames' keel for fish and other wide-tailed twin-fin boards. Hobart Laidlaw "Hobie" Alter is credited on the template. The set is laid up in solid fiberglass and sold as a pair, and it is the one product in this group that comes in a full spread of colours — nine of them — with the fin system chosen at checkout rather than split across two listings.

How that reads

Base length is where drive comes from and depth is where drag comes from, so a long, shallow keel holds a line and makes speed down the face without the resistance of a tall upright twin. What it does not do is pivot: a keel wants long arcs off the rail rather than a snap off the tail, and it is happiest with a wide tail under it.

Who it suits

Fish and other wide-tailed twins, ridden for trim and drive. If your board is a performance twin shape and you want it to turn tighter than a keel will, a more upright twin template is the better match.
