The Fin

Mick Mackie's Big Twin with a low, keeled trailer β€” three fins, surfable as a twin or with the trailer in for hold.

The Big Twin has more area and a longer base than most twins, which puts it between a classic keel and a traditional twin: 5.37" deep on a 6.03" base, 23.27 sq in. The trailer that comes with it is the opposite shape β€” 2.13" deep on a 6.47" base, 8.76 sq in β€” a low, keeled fin that sits under the tail rather than standing up in it. Mackie is the Australian shaper behind it. All three fins take an FCS base.

How that reads

The generous area and long base give the pair real drive without taking away the looseness a twin is bought for. The trailer's job is different: almost no depth, a very long base, so it adds hold and stability and extra push when the wave asks for down-the-line drive, without the tail-anchoring feel of a full third fin.

Who it suits

Fish, hybrids and other alternative shapes with three boxes. Surf it as a twin in small, playful waves and add the trailer when the wave has enough size or wall that the tail starts letting go earlier than you want.

If this is not the one

Board with mixed boxes? The Mackie Big Twin + Trailer Fiberglass (FCS / Futures) pairs Futures twins with an FCS trailer. Want keels without a trailer? The True Ames Mackie Sidecut Fish Keel (FCS / Futures).

From True Ames

The set lands somewhere between a classic keel and traditional twin, with the trailer giving a bit extra hold and stability, and a bit extra juice when down-the-line drive is required.

Our take

This is for a wide-tailed fish or fuller mid-length where you want keel glide and projection plus the stability of a low trailer behind it β€” a steadier, more planted setup with a forgiving back end. If you would rather slice tighter, rail-deep turns, go with the Mackie Sidecut Fish Keel; if you want pure twin looseness, the Mandala Delta-V Twin is the call.

More About This Fin

Mick Mackie's Big Twin + Trailer is a three-fin set made by True Ames in solid fiberglass, sold here with FCS-compatible bases. The front twins run a longer base and larger area than typical upright twins, and the third fin is a low-profile keeled trailer rather than a tall center fin. Mackie is a fish and twin specialist from New South Wales, and the set is intended for fishes, wide-tailed twins, and fuller mid-lengths.
