The Fin

Manny Caro's twinzer set — two rear fins with two small canards ahead of them — refined at Mandala out of Wil Jobson's original design.

Four fins in solid fiberglass, FCS or Futures compatible, in dark green, smoke or golden kelp, with a flat matte finish. The rears stand 4.94" on a 4.83" base; the canards 2.85" on a 2.94" base. Caro has been riding twinzers since long before the rest of the surf world caught on, as an understudy of Wil Jobson, the guru of the design, and this is the set he settled on: balance, synergy, power and release, in his words.

How that reads

The twinzer splits the job between two fins. The canard sits forward and outboard and breaks the water tension, so the rear fin behind it can be driven at a more aggressive angle without letting go — sharper turns, more fluidity. What comes out of it is the freedom of a twin with a turn closer to a thruster's, and none of the tracky, sticky feel a quad can have at the end of an arc.

Who it suits

Boards drilled for a twinzer, which is the one requirement: performance shortboards, fish of any size, mid-lengths and longboards all take it. A plain twin board will not, without the extra pair of plugs set forward and outboard of the rears.
