The Fin

Rich Pavel's Super Dialer is a quad set with real area in it — upright low, raked high — for quads ridden when the surf has size.

A four-fin set in solid fiberglass, Futures compatible, in smoke. The profile does two things at once: the bottom half stands fairly upright, which is where the control comes from, and the upper half is generously raked, which is where it lets go. Overall area is on the full side for a quad, so this is a traction-first set rather than a skatey one, and Pavel is a shaper with a long history of drawing exactly that sort of fin.

How that reads

Upright down low means the fin bites early and the board holds its line while it is loaded up; rake through the top means the exit stays smooth rather than catchy. The area is what you feel at speed — grip through a fast, committed turn where a smaller quad set would start to wash out the back. In weak surf that same area is more fin than the wave has the power to move.

Who it suits

Quads ridden in solid surf: fish and quad shortboards on the days when hold matters more than looseness, and anyone who wants traction through a high-speed turn rather than a tail that slides. Less suited to gutless beachbreak, where a lower-area quad set will feel freer and come round quicker.
