The Fin

A keel-derived quad with a cutaway rear β€” long-based drive that still lets go when you ask it to. Troy Elmore drew it by taking the curve off his own keel template and cutting the back of the fin away.

What the cutaway does

A keel holds. That is the whole point of a keel, and it is also the complaint: it keeps holding when you want the tail to come around. Notching the trailing edge out near the base shortens the fin's rear footprint without shortening its base, so the set keeps the long-base drive and loses the part that fights a turn. The result sits between a keel and a conventional quad β€” the speed off the bottom of a keel, with a release point you can actually find.

How it rides

  • Drives off a long base like a keel, down the line and through flat sections.
  • Releases out of a turn instead of holding all the way through it.
  • Suits fish, and any wide-tailed board that feels locked-in on keels.
  • Rewards surfing off the back foot.

If this is not the one

Want the keel without the release? Run a straight keel set. Want a quad built to turn as tight as possible rather than to drive? The John Simon Quad Type II is the one drawn for that.
