The Fin
Renny Yater's single fin, drawn for his Pocket Rocket pintail — upright, full-foiled and stiff, in eight sizes from 6.5" to 10".
Solid fiberglass for a standard longboard box, in clear, smoke, black, blue or green. Yater drew this one in the early '70s to go with the Pocket Rocket, his high-performance single fin, and the proportions have not needed altering since: upright profile, full foil, minimal flex. Length, base and rake are balanced against each other rather than pushed any one way, which is how the same template stretches from a 6.5" mid-length fin to a 10" log fin.
How that reads
The stiffness is the point. A fin with little flex returns what you put into it straight away — power, drive and stability, and no vagueness when the surf is bigger. The upright profile keeps the turn tight over the back foot, while the full foil holds water attached through trim so speed carries down the line. It still releases easily at the end of an arc, which is why it has never felt dated.
Who it suits
Almost anything with a centre box, which is the whole argument for it — choose the size to the board. Bigger days especially, where the relative stiffness gives you something to push against. Riders chasing a looser, springier feel should look at a raked template with a narrower, more flexible tip.

Our take
Put it on a pulled-in longboard, a retro single, or a mid-length when you want stiff, upright drive that holds through fast sections — the board accelerates off your back foot instead of flexing and releasing. Size larger for a standalone single, smaller for a 2+1 center; if you want a more forgiving, flexier fin that works across more board types, the Greenough 4A is the call instead.

The Yater Classic is a solid fiberglass single fin designed by Renny Yater, made by True Ames, originally drawn to go with his Pocket Rocket pintail. The template is upright with relatively little rake, a full foil, and minimal flex. It comes in sizes of 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 9, 9.5, and 10 inches, covering retro single fins, pulled-in longboards, and mid-lengths, with smaller sizes usable as 2+1 centers.
