Yoshinori Ueda's Freedom is the balanced, do-everything single fin in his line, in 8.25", 9.75" and 10.5".
Solid fiberglass for a standard longboard box, in smoke or clear. Ueda β Y.U β is a Japanese surfer, board builder and shaper with a long history across many parts of the trade, and the Freedom is his even-handed template: clean, classic curves with nothing exaggerated in them. Hold, drive and manoeuvrability turn up in similar measure, and the outline is happy across different wave types, which is the reason this one lands on so many boards.
A middle-of-the-road outline is less a compromise than a wide working range: enough area and rake to hold a line when the wave stands up, enough base to push against off the bottom, and nothing so upright or so raked that the board only wants to do one thing. The fin does not impose a style on the board it goes into, which is what makes it a stable go-to rather than a specialist.
Riders who do not already know exactly what they want out of the box, and any level of experience β it works at a high level without demanding much. Sizes run from 8.25" for shorter boards up to 10.5" for a full log. If you want more spring and a livelier tip, a thinner, more flexible template is the other direction.
Clean classic curves with a moderate, neutral outline that splits the difference between hold and release. It holds, it drives, it turns, and it does none of those things at the expense of the others.
If you want one single fin that covers a quiver of one or two boards without specializing, the Freedom is the call: 8.25 inches for mid-lengths, 9.75 to 10.5 for logs, and forgiving enough that you won't fight it while you dial in box position. If you want more turning pop in weak surf or a dedicated noseriding fin, look elsewhere.
Balanced all-around single fin from Yoshinori Ueda's YU lineup, made by True Ames. The template carries a moderate, neutral outline with classic curves, moderate rake and a base sized to hold a trim line. It comes in three sizes, 8.25, 9.75 and 10.5 inches, with the 8.25 inch suiting mid-lengths and smaller logs and the larger sizes suiting full longboards.
