The Fin

Tyler Warren's Modern Keel — a long-based, heavily raked keel for modern twin fins — in Hexcore, cut to drop into Futures boxes.

A twin pair in Hexcore, Futures compatible, in black or white. 7.46" of base under a 5.27" fin, 25.64 square inches a side, with an 80/20 foil. True Ames has always made this template as a glass-on; this version carries a slight angled relief in the base so it fits a Futures box. Hexcore is the light construction in the range, with flex characteristics of its own, and the whole set is drawn to be fast rather than tight.

How that reads

Base is what a keel trades on and this one has a lot of it: drive builds as soon as the board is on rail and keeps building, so it runs rather than pivots. The extended rake carries that drive past the point where a shorter, more upright keel would let go, which is why it wants a wave with a wall — fast, down the line, somewhere to go. The 80/20 foil means an inside face that is shaped rather than flat.

Who it suits

Modern twin fin boards with Futures boxes, in surf that runs. True Ames' glass-on version of the same template is the other way to get it if the board is being built for it. In slow, soft waves where you want the tail to pivot under your back foot, a shorter-based, more upright twin will do that better than a keel this long.
