Checkerboard and neon is not a costume choice; it is what the back half of the 1980s actually looked like from the outside of a berm. Under Pete Fox's creative direction from 1986, the brand that had started as a suspension shop turned into the loudest thing on the start gate β the zebra-striped Image pant of 1988 became the best-selling product Fox had ever made, accounting for roughly half of 1989 sales. Fluorescent inks and repeat patterns were the logic of a sport watched from two hundred yards away through dust: a rider had to be identifiable at a glance, and a sponsor had to be readable on television. This one takes that grammar literally β gray ground, an all-over check, neon yellow and cyan, the fox head large on the chest with FOX RACING set beside it. The pattern does the shouting the colors started.
