The Details
On the evening of 11 September 2001, members of Congress stood on the Capitol steps and sang "God Bless America" — a song Irving Berlin wrote in 1918, set aside, revised in 1938 and handed to Kate Smith for an Armistice Day broadcast. Within days the title was on shirts, and so was UNITED WE STAND, the phrase that served as the country's default caption for the year that followed. This is one of those shirts, and what it declines to show is the attack. The towers stand whole and photographic, a flag behind them, the Statue of Liberty small at their feet, a bald eagle crossing the frame: the skyline as it was, printed as a memorial rather than as a document. Showing the buildings standing is the memorial decision — the loss is marked by its absence from the picture. The neck tag carries the Fruit of the Loom fruit cluster. A quarter century on, shirts like this survive mainly as a record of how a country grieved in print, at speed, at the mall.
