The Details
Most Dalí shirts print the melting watches of 1931. This one prints what he did to them twenty years later: the back carries The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory, painted 1952–54, a ten-by-thirteen-inch panel now held by the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. After 1945 Dalí called the atom his favourite food for thought, and took his own most famous picture apart to say so — the bay at Cadaqués flooded, the olive tree coming to pieces, the watches multiplied with their hands off the dials, the ground broken into brick-shaped blocks that float without touching, because matter does not touch. The horns receding upstream are missiles. The front is the portrait the gift shops settled on — moustache waxed to two points, one eye held wide — under the signature he made as recognisable as the work. André Breton had already anagrammed that name into Avida Dollars. The artist-portrait tee is a whole genre, and Dalí is the artist it was invented for.
