New Line released Se7en on 22 September 1995 and could not work out how to sell it. Early advertising pitched an edgy prestige thriller; the research said Brad Pitt's usual audience was not this film's audience. Once word of mouth arrived the campaign turned back toward the star, and that is this shirt precisely β the front is Pitt grinning, lit like a magazine cover, and the only clue to which film it belongs to is a small red tally beside his jaw. The back is that tally at full size, five strokes and two, with "seven" scrawled alongside. The scratched hand comes from the picture's other famous piece of design: Kyle Cooper's title sequence, assembled over five weeks with scratches and pen marks worked directly into the negative and cut to Coil's remix of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer." It cost $50,000, and a decade of title sequences copied it. A promo tee that borrows the titles rather than the poster is doing better work than most.
Vintage Se7en (1995) movie promo t-shirt featuring Brad Pitt. Smiling portrait with red tally marks counting to seven (VII) for the seven deadly sins theme. Faded black/charcoal color.
