The Details
The Cramps coined the word for what they were and then spent decades disowning it: Poison Ivy said psychobilly was carny language from 1976, put on early posters to drum up business, not a genre with a haircut attached. She and Lux Interior met in Sacramento in 1972 over records, started the band in New York in 1976, and built the whole thing out of rockabilly, R&B and drive-in horror — which is why their graphics have always followed monster-movie posters rather than rock ones. The famous instance is Stephen Blickenstaff's caricature of Lux, drawn on Halloween night 1983 and used on Bad Music for Bad People in 1984; Lorde wore it on the cover of Rolling Stone thirty years later. This print is the all-over-print era running the same instinct at full bleed: drippy green horror lettering across the chest, hot-rod flames up both sides, band photography blown past the point of grain. AOPs were costly to produce, made in small runs, and not built to last.
