The Details
The Y is a favor from a rival. Juha Tirinen and Kaija Gustafsson founded the company in Forssa, Finland in 1977 as JOKO, having both come out of the Finnish sportswear firms Koho and Sinisalo, and their first product was mitts for pesäpallo, the Finnish version of baseball. Tirinen raced motocross internationally, the company drifted toward riding gear, and the drift went through Moto-X Fox — where Geoff Fox suggested a J would read wrong in English and the name should start with a Y instead. It worked out for both of them. In 1983 Håkan Carlqvist took the 500 on Yoko gear; in 1984 Yoko riders swept all three world championships — Rinaldi at 125, Kinigadner at 250, Malherbe at 500. Everything about this one is the moment after that: turquoise ground, mock neck, YOKO in pink and white over a splash of brushed paint, and purple YOKO patches stitched at both shoulders like sponsor badges for the brand itself.
