The Details
The mark filling the whole back of this jersey is a piano company's. Three interlocking tuning forks: Torakusu Yamaha's business began in 1887 as a reed-organ maker, Nippon Gakki, and the motorcycle division only split off as Yamaha Motor in 1955 after the YA-1. A century of instrument-building is why a dirt bike wears a chord. Here the forks appear twice — small in a circle beside YAMAHA on the chest, with RACING beneath it, and huge between the shoulder blades — on a royal-blue ground printed with fine black pinstripes edge to edge, white diamond speed shapes cutting across the body, YAMAHA reversed out down both sleeves, black ribbed cuffs and collar. The neck label reads YAMAHA. It is worth putting beside the plain yellow jersey in this same batch: once sublimation could carry a pattern across an entire garment, the team graphic stopped being a chest print and became the fabric itself.
