The Fin

The Big Twin has more area and a longer base than most twins, which puts it between a classic keel and a traditional twin: 5.37" deep on a 6.03" base, 23.27 sq in. The trailer that comes with it is the opposite shape — 2.13" deep on a 6.47" base, 8.76 sq in — a low, keeled fin that sits under the tail rather than standing up in it. Mackie is the Australian shaper behind it. This is the mixed-base version: Futures twins, FCS trailer, for a board whose centre plug is not the same system as its sides.

How that reads

The generous area and long base give the pair real drive without taking away the looseness a twin is bought for. The trailer's job is different: almost no depth, a very long base, so it adds hold and stability and extra push when the wave asks for down-the-line drive, without the tail-anchoring feel of a full third fin.

Who it suits

Fish, hybrids and other alternative shapes with three boxes. Surf it as a twin in small, playful waves and add the trailer when the wave has enough size or wall that the tail starts letting go earlier than you want.
